They are coming from around the state - even as far away as Kansas and Ohio.
The second annual Florida Wiener Dog Derby will be held on Saturday, March 19, with hopefuls already entering to win the coveted "Wien Jacket."
The first derby last year was wildly successful, said Doug Dailey, the current president of Florida Wiener Dog Derby Inc. "It was the most successful first year wiener dog racing event in the country."
Organizer Doug Dailey, buddy Tex and Marketing Manager Donna Ellis at the starting gates Dailey built for the event.
The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Lee Civic Center. "Miss Wienee of Naples (past winner) will be there, and the jacket is serious business," he said.
Dogs must be purebred daschunds to enter. "This year is different," said Marketing Director Donna Ellis. "We are only taking on-line registration for most of the classes, except for the Masters Class."
There are several classes, they said, including adult, puppy and Masters.
