Father recounts fire that killed 4-year-old girl

February 16, 2014
Associated Press

RUSKIN, Fla. (AP) — A Tampa Bay-area man says he couldn't reach his 4-year-old daughter when a fire engulfed their mobile home.

Alejandra Carmona died in the fire late Friday in Ruskin. Monico Carmona Jr. and his girlfriend escaped the blaze with three other children.

Carmona tells The Tampa Tribune (http://bit.ly/1iYWm2h) that he has burns on his hands and ears and cuts from trying to move furniture and punch through windows to get to his children. His girlfriend and the other children were not badly injured.

The fire knocked down power lines, which initially hindered firefighters' efforts to bring the blaze under control.

Carmona says neighbors knocked out a window to try to get to Alejandra through the thick smoke. He says there was nothing he could do because the fire was so hot.
