KEY WEST, Fla. (AP) — Florida offshore powerboat racers Marc Granet and Scott Begovich are leading the Superboat Unlimited class at the Key West World Championship after piloting Miss Geico to a first-place finish on the first of three racing days.
Granet of Boca Raton and Begovich of Jupiter maintained an average speed of 92.04 mph Wednesday, keeping the lead throughout the race and posting the fastest time of 44 registered entries.
Other class leaders include Outerlimits, owned by Joe Sgro of Bellmore, N.Y., in Superboat Extreme and Stihl, driven by Robert Noble of Orlando, in Superboat.
Despite rough seas, only one accident occurred. Officials said Steve Quick Jewelers.com "stuffed" a wave, leaving the racers uninjured, but the boat badly damaged.
Racing is to continue Friday, with the finals set for Sunday.
