Almost 300 students out sick at north Fla school

FORREST CORNERS, Fla. (AP) — Almost 300 elementary school students in north Florida apparently were stricken by an norovirus-like infection.

Marion County School District spokesman Kevin Christian tells the Ocala Star-Banner (http://bit.ly/193v6tu ) that he can't recall "so many people getting sick in so short a time span."

On Friday, 230 students were absent and another 50 were sent home early from East Marion Elementary School. Three teachers and three other staff members also were absent.

That number was up from Thursday, when 115 students were absent and another 34 went home early.

Christian said custodians have wiped down every surface inside the school. The district also used special fogger-type decontamination devices in parts of the school to combat the virus.

More than 700 students are enrolled at the school.
