Hooters restaurant chain marks 30th anniversary

CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) — The Hooters restaurant chain is celebrating its 30th anniversary.

The first restaurant in a chain known for its chicken wings and waitresses wearing tiny orange shorts opened in Clearwater on Oct. 4, 1983. Today, the chain extends to more than 425 restaurants in 28 countries.

One of the founders tells The Tampa Tribune (http://bit.ly/GElLzs ) that global success didn't seem possible on the restaurant's first day. Ed Droste says only three people showed up. Droste and the five other founders held a birthday party for a friend to make the place seem more full.

Some of those founders returned to the Clearwater restaurant Friday to celebrate the brand's milestone. The wooden shack that housed the original Hooters was rebuilt and refurbished last year.
