Mother of drowned Haitian migrant seeks answers

September 26, 2013
Associated Press

MIAMI (AP) — The mother of a young woman who drowned while being smuggled by boat to the U.S. wants officials to investigate her daughter's death.

Judith Valentin was one of 10 people brought from Haiti, through the Bahamas, to Florida on Aug. 28. Nine people made it to Palm Beach and were immediately detained. Valentin's body washed ashore.

Simone Jeanty came to Florida Monday on a humanitarian visa for her daughter's funeral. She says she's heard from some of the migrants that Valentin was raped and thrown overboard.

ICE spokesman Nestor Yglesias says the investigation into the smuggling is ongoing but could not say whether the 9 other individuals remain in the country. Local officials did not immediately return messages left by the AP Thursday regarding the allegations of rape and murder.
