Nearsightedness Becoming More Common

February 26, 2010 - Rodney Smith

Recently it was reported that nearsighted is becoming more common in the U.S.

This was originally reported in the journal Archives of Ophthalmology, but many newspapers published some of the results of this study.

Here is what was reported:  The National Health and Nutrition Examination looked at surveys of Americans aged 12-54. In  1971 and 1972 25 percent of this population was nearsighted. In surveying this same population in the years 1999 to 2004 42 percent were nearsighted.

However, and I think this is very important, the article reports that is still a mystery as to why an increasing number of Americans are becoming nearsighted.
