REITs--Is it time to make changes?

Real Estate Investment Trusts, commonly referred to as REITs, have shielded owners who use this investment strategy from corporate taxes since 1960. The tax benefits of REITs are currently being scrutinized by a congressional committee that is looking for ways to boost economic growth by closing loopholes. REITs were established to give individuals an easy way to invest in income-producing real estate. REITs paid $29billion in dividends in 2012. A major change in the tax treatment of REITs would impact the entire industry. Should they be exempt?
